WESTFIELD, Mass. - Three Worcester State University student-athletes have received weekly awards from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, brought to you by GEICO.
Kylie Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) from the women’s lacrosse team and Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) of the women's outdoor track & field team were each named their respective Rookie of the Week awards, while the baseball team’s PJ Walsh (Bridgewater, Mass.) was named MASCAC Pitcher of the Week.
Hill collected six points on three goals and three assists during the MASCAC Tournament. She netted two goals with two assists and three ground balls in the 12-6 quarterfinal win over Massachusetts Maritime on Tuesday, before scoring a goal and assist in the 17-11 semifinal setback to Framingham State. It is her second consecutive MASCAC Rookie of the Week award, and third overall this season
Coming off of winning a MASCAC title in the event, Sanderson finished in 11th place in the javelin with a top throw of 35.97m (118’) at the New England Championships over the weekend at Williams College. It is Sanderson’s first MASCAC weekly award of the season.
Walsh was stellar on the mound last week to earn his first MASCAC Pitcher of the Week honors of the season. Walsh earned a win and a save over 12 innings pitched last week, allowing eight hits and two earned runs, with seven strikeouts and a 1.50 ERA. He threw a complete nine-inning game, giving up seven hits with two earned runs and five strikeouts in the 7-2 win over Salem State on Friday, and also earned a three-inning save, only allowing one hit with two strikeouts in the 6-5 win over Massachusetts Maritime on Monday.
