Trinity Blanks Out Baseball In Twinbill Sweep

Auburndale, FL --- Behind a pair of dominant pitching performances by Trinity freshman southpaw Robert Gau (Westport, CT) and junior righthander DJ Goldberg (Plainville, MA), the Bantams defeated Worcester State, 4-0 and 6-0, this afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational at the Lake Myrtle complex.

WSU is now 1-7 all-time against Trinity, who won the 2008 National Division III Championship.

In his first career start, Gau hurled a complete-game three-hitter as not one ball left the infield. Gau (1-0) used a strong cut fastball and curve to paint the corners and fan ten men as 11 were retired on the ground.

The Bantams (3-3) got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a two-run single by junior Stephen Howard (Cheshire, CT). Trinity crossed the plate in the fourth on an RBI double by senior David Casanova (Bristol, CT) and a fielder's choice RBI by Howard in the sixth.

Worcester State (2-6) would strand three in scoring position in the opening contest.

Carlier led off the second with a single to the pitcher and moved to third on consecutive ground-outs, but he was left on base when sophomore JD Salinas (Fredericksburg, TX) struck-out to end the frame.

In the fifth, Salinas reached first on a bunt-single with a pair of men down in the inning before moving ahead two bases on a failed pick-off. Salinas, however, failed to score when Gau used his sixth punchout to end the inning.

WSU first-year lefthander DJ Colbert (Somersworth, NH) was handed the setback in his first start of the campaign as he went the first five innings allowing three runs on five hits to go along with four hits, two walks and a pair of hit batters.

Trinity started off the second game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases juiced and no one out, senior Kyle Mortimer (Spencer, MA), junior Joe Papa (Stoneham, MA) and freshman Scott Hurley (Greenwich, CT) all manufactured run-producing at-bats.

The Bantams had one man on in every inning while they scored in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Mortimer highlighted the offense with a solo homer to right in the fifth frame.

Goldberg (1-0) was effective as he yielded just three Lancer base knocks in the complete game effort. He struck out a trio of batters and issued two free passes.

WSU's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh with sophomore Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, MA) and freshman Jeff Bolio (Oxford, MA), but a fly-out ended the contest.

First-year Joe Perlak (Chicopee, MA) was handed with the setback as he went four-plus innings allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits. Perlak registered three punch outs and walked one.

The Lancers continue their spring trip with a double-header against Clarkson on Tuesday at Lake Myrtle while the Bantams play UMass Dartmouth at the Chain of Lakes complex. Both contests start at 12 PM.
