Rhode Island College Bests Baseball, 22-1

Worcester, MA --- Rhode Island College senior Joan Mustafa (Providence, RI) went 3-for-3 including a sixth inning three-run triple and junior David Hoey (Lincoln, RI) went solid six innings to help propel the Anchormen to a 22-1 victory over Worcester State in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at Rockwood Field.

After two scoreless frames, the Anchormen (12-8) were able to hang a crooked number in the top of the third. The visitors loaded up the bases with their first three batters to begin things before Worcester State freshman DJ Colbert (Somersworth, NH) got two quick pop-outs as he looked to work his way out of the jam.

However, a high pop-up in the infield on the next batter was misplayed allowing two runs to score.  After back-to-back walks pushed the score to 3-0, senior Victor Baez (Providence, RI) hit a double into the left center gap to empty the bases making the score 6-0 after the third.

In the top half of the next inning, Rhode Island College was able to push the score to 8-0 as sophomore Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) drove in two runners on a double into left field.

RIC increased their lead by one run in the fifth inning as Mustafa crossed the plate on a passed ball.

The Anchorman kept their foot on the pedal as they reeled off five runs in the top half of the sixth including Mustafa's three RBI triple for the 14-0 game.

The Lancers (4-16) finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as freshman JD Salinas (Fredericksburg, TX) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate classmate Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, CA) cutting the deficit to 14-1.

WSU could not stop the RIC offense as the Anchormen rattled off eight more runs in the final three innings of play including a ninth inning two-RBI double by junior Kyle Mann (West Warwick, RI) for the final score.

Hoey (2-0) pitched six strong frames for the visitors, allowing three hits, no walks and he fanned five. Rhode Island College's bullpen kept the pace as a trio of pitchers combined for three innings, two hits, one walk, no runs and five strikeouts.
Colbert (0-3) was dealt the setback for the Lancers as he went three innings allowing six runs (zero earned) walking four and a pair of punch outs. WSU used six pitchers over the remainder of the contest as the bench yielded five earned runs (16 unearned) and walked eight.

Verrecchia, senior Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) and junior Franklin Salcedo (Providence, RI) each had two hits apiece for the Anchormen for a lineup where nearly ever starter had a base-knock. Allaire also crossed home plate four times for RIC who finished the day pounding away 16 hits.
Both squads continue non-conference play on Thursday at 3:30. The Lancers will travel to UMass Dartmouth while the Anchormen entertain Brandeis.
