Salem State Sweeps Worcester State in MASCAC Doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Salem State baseball team defeated the Worcester State Lancers by scores of 3-2 and 2-0 in a Saturday afternoon Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader at Rockwood Park.

 

With the wins, Salem State improves to 17-7 overall, and 4-4 in the MASCAC. Worcester State dips to 5-5 in the league.

 

 

GAME ONE: Salem State 3, Worcester State 2

 

Worcester State opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Salem State in extra innings.  A sacrifice fly by first basemen Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.) scored the game-winning run for the Vikings in the top of the 8th.

 
 

With Worcester State down 2-1 going into their last at bat in the bottom of the 7th  inning, sophomore Mike Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored senior Jake Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) to tie the game at two runs a piece.

 
 

Leading the way offensively for the Vikings were seniors Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) and Andrew Deloury (Andover, Mass.).  Connors hit 3-for-3 for the game with one walk.  Deloury hit 3-for-4 with an RBI single in his first at bat.

 
 

For the Lancers, senior Adam Barry (Auburn, Mass.) and sophomore Jimmy Sheehan (Oxford, Mass.) led with the bats. Both players finished 2-for-3 in the game.

 
 

Tim Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) picked up the win despite losing the save opportunity in the bottom of the seventh. Salem State's starter Stephen Keskinidis (Stoneham, Mass.) went five and a third innings picking up four strike outs, allowing one run on six hits.

 
 

Tyler Barrie (Oxford, Mass.) went the distance earning four strikeouts giving up two earned runs on nine hits. Tim Woods gets his first win of the year and improves to 1-2. Barrie falls to 1-5 on the year with today's loss.

 
 
 

GAME TWO: Salem State 2, Worcester State 0

 

Salem State's junior pitcher Will Twiss (Middleton, MA) threw a 4-hit, complete game shutout in game two of the MASCAC doubleheader. Twiss also had one strikeout in the bottom of the 7th and improves to 3-1 on the year.

 
 

Opposite of Twiss was Lancer's junior pitcher Luke Brennan.  Brennan (Worcester, Mass.) went the distance, pitching a complete game while giving up two runs (one unearned) on four hits. Brennan was one strikeout shy of tying his season high of nine strikeouts in a game. He suffered the loss and falls to 2-4 on the season.

 
 

Deloury's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning gave the Vikings the 2-0 lead on their way to the sweep of the Lancers of Worcester State.

 
 

Sophomore Joe White (Bellingham, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double down the left field line to get the Vikings on the board in the top of the third inning.

 
 
 

The Lancers will travel to Fitchburg State on April 25th for a doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m. Framingham State is next up to play Salem State on the 25th of April at 12 noon.
