WORCESTER, Mass. – It took 12 innings in the opening game, but Worcester State University outlasted Westfield State to send them on their way to a sweep of the Owls in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) baseball action on Friday afternoon at Lyons Diamond.
The Lancers came from two runs down in the bottom of the twelfth to defeat Westfield 3-2 in the first game, and then topped the Owls 3-1 in the second game of the day to improve to 11-11 (5-3 MASCAC).
Worcester State is on the road on Monday when they play at Fitchburg State at 12:00 PM.
Game 1: Worcester State 3, Westfield State 2 (12 inn.)
It was zeroes across the board for both sides until the 12th, as starting pitchers Ben Smith (Bourne, Mass.) and Nate Langmeier (East Granby, Conn.) went toe to toe for ten innings.
Both pitchers allowed just five hits over ten scoreless innings. Langmeier struck out eleven, while Smith fanned eight. Neither pitcher figured into the decision.
Westfield broke through first, scoring two runs in the top of the 12th on a pair of hits, including an RBI single by Samuel Palmer (Medfield, Mass.).
Down 2-0, the Lancers immediately got on the board when Sean Dutton (Leominster, Mass.) homered to right field to lead off the bottom of the 12th.
Andrew LeBlanc (Leominster, Mass.) followed with a pinch-hit double and he scored when Chris Wright (Jefferson, Mass.) singled to left field.
With two outs, Thomas DiBattista (Hudson, Mass.) singled to center field to score Wright and give the Lancers the walk-off win.
Freshman Jarret Morrill (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the victory for the Lancers with two innings of relief of Smith.
Westfield's Joe Espinola (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss, with both pitchers of decision now 1-1 on the year.

Worcester scored twice in the third on a two-run single up the middle by Alex Sorenti-Burns (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and added an insurance run with a Chris Ausiello (Tyngsboro, Mass.) single to score Wright in the fourth.
Joey Zawisza (Newington, Conn.) improved to 3-1 with a complete game victory. Zawisza allowed just one run on seven hits while striking out a pair. The only blemish against him was a solo home run by catcher Max Silverman (Westford, Mass.), which gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Ausiello was 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Zack Roberts (Northbridge, Mass.) went 1-2 at the plate and also scored on Sorenti-Burns' RBI single.
