WESTFIELD, Mass. – For the second time this season, Worcester State junior pitcher Ben Smith (Bourne, Mass.) has been named Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Pitcher of the Week.
In a busy week for the Lancers, Smith gave his team 17 scoreless innings over the course of two MASCAC series. On April 11th against MCLA, Smith opened a doubleheader with a complete-game seven inning shutout. He struck out eight and allowed just four hits in a 2-0 Lancer victory that kicked off a two-game sweep.
This past weekend, Smith went 10 innings of scoreless baseball against Westfield State in a game that the Lancers went on to win 3-2 in 12 innings. In that game, he struck out eight and allowed just five hits over ten scoreless innings.
Smith, who was named MASCAC Pitcher of the Week after the opening games of the season, has appeared in eight games this season, making seven starts and holding a 2-1 record. In 45.0 innings pitched, he has an ERA of 1.00, allowing just five earned runs. He has struck out 49 batters and walked just 12.
The Lancers are currently in action against Fitchburg State, and will be back on their home field on Wednesday when they finish their three-game set against MCLA at 3:30 PM.
