Lancers Split with Hamilton in Final Day of Spring Break Play

Worcester, MA- with the final day of Spring Break action for the Lancers Baseball team (7-3,0-0), Worcester State wraps up the trip with a seven inning double header versus Hamilton before their journey home tomorrow morning.

Final

Game 1

Worcester State: 6

Hamilton: 2

Game 2

Worcester State: 4

Hamilton: 15

How it Happened:

The opening innings of the game would see a pitching duel on the mound as sophomore Gavin Price (Worcester, MA) would make quick work of his opening batters in a match with Hamilton's Taylor. The fourth would find things shift in Worcester's favor though as a balk and a wild pitch would send sophomore Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) across the plate off a single by sophomore Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA). Hamilton would manage to tie the game up at the top of the fifth off a bobbled bunt that would not only put a runner on second but record their first run of the game but Price would settle the inning down to escape with just the single run in the action.

The bottom of the fifth would see Worcester reclaim a run lead as junior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) would open the action with a single that a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jeremy DeLacruz (Lowell, MA) would help advance to second. Jewett would then send a single to right field where Doyle would then bunt to first and beat the play as the action switched to home plate and Thurber raced in for run two. The bottom of the sixth would bring additional scoring as senior Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI), closing in on his career 100th hit, would rocket number 99 over the left field fence for a lead off solo home run. After loading the bases a sacrifice fly from Doyle would bring Thurber across for the fourth run and two outs on the board. On newly loaded bases a wild pitch would send Delacruz home for the Lancers fifth run and a passed ball two batters later would record run six.

Hamilton would snag one more run back in the sixth but Price and the Lancer defense would be quick to work their way out of potential danger to claim the opening day win 6-2. Price would go the complete seven innings on the mound allowing just seven hits and striking out 10.

Game two would get off to a quick start for Worcester as an early error on Hamilton's mound would bring across two runs with Doyle and senior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) racing in before a play could be made. Graduate student Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) made quick work of the bottom of the inning for the Lancers to carry a 2-0 lead into the second.

Hamilton would snag a run back in the bottom of the second off a second pitch homer to left field to cut the lead down to just a single run. With the scoring seal open, Hamilton would not take their foot off the pedal as they scored seven runs in the inning to jump to a 7-2 lead before junior Nolan Turner (Barnstable, MA) was able to work Worcester out of the inning.

Hamilton would not let up for the rest of the game amassing 15 runs by the bottom of the fifth inning to claim the 15-2 lead in game two. Worcester would manage to get two runs back in the bottom of the seventh off a senior Andrew Mediana (Boston, MA) single but the Lancers were unable to dig any further, falling 15-4.
