Worcester, MA- As the final week of the season hits the books, the Lancers (20-11, 11-7) take a step away from conference play to meet up with Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a nine inning battle to test their mettle before playoffs begin next week.
Final
Worcester State: 2
Saint Joseph (Conn.): 1
How it Happened:
Off some standout defense by the Lancers highlighted by first year Isiah Weston (Essex, MA) the first inning would be three quick outs that was followed up in the second as junior Nolan Turner (Barnstable, MA) would nab two quick strikeouts to keep the Blue Jays off the board. The bottom of the inning would see the first scoring action as senior Andrew Medina (Boston, MA) would single up the middle to end across junio Joe Auger (Lowell, MA) for a 1-0 lead. That score would hold until the fourth when Worcester would tack on another run as Auger would go deep for a solo home run. The solid fielding would continue for Worcester with first year Chris Mondesir (Roslindale, MA) and senior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) making some impressive grabs to keep the game in control.
Worcester would run into some trouble in the top of the eight as USJ would load the bases and a single to center field would bring one run in before the Lancers stellar defense worked their way out of the danger to hold a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. First year Matt Direnzo (Leicester, MA) would come in to close for the top of the ninth and hold on for the save as the Lancers defeated the Blue Jays 2-1.
What's Next:
The Blue and Gold (21-11, 11-7) will be in action tomorrow afternoon at 3pm to host Keene State in another out of conference end of season meeting between the teams.
