Lancers Taken Down by Panthers

Worcester, MA- The Lancers football team returned to action after a nine day hiatus, as they traveled to battle the Plymouth State Panthers in a MASCAC showdown . The Lancers are coming off a heartbreaking loss to Mass Maritime as they fell 22-19. The Lancers look to bounce back and get back in the win column as they battle the Panthers.

The Panthers were the first to find paydirt on the rainy Saturday as they drove down the field on the opening drive taking a 7-0 lead. The team's alternated punts for a handful of possessions before the Lancers threw an interception in their own territory, which translated to a Plymouth State touchdown making it 14-0. Plymouth State's offense continued to roll as they took a 50 yard run to the house increasing the lead to 21-0 . With 2 seconds left in the first half the Panthers executed their two minute drill with a touchdown, making it 28-0 at the break. The Lancers were led defensively by graduate student Ryan Justin (Fitchburg, MA) and first year Romeo Holland (Webster, MA) as they both contributed 7 tackles each. 

 

Worcester State got the ball to begin the second half and marched right down the field, with a solid ground attack, but ultimately fell short of the endzone, with a turnover on downs in the red zone. The Lancers forced a punt, but the offense committed their third turnover of the day resulting in a Plymouth State shortfield and the Panthers lead extending to 35-0. The Lancers were led by running back junior Nico Holmes as he totaled 180 total yards of offense for the Lancers

 

The Blue and Gold, who now sit at (1-6, 1-4) and return to Coughlin Field next Saturday afternoon, for the annual homecoming game as they host MASCAC foe in West Conn, with a 3pm kickoff. Plymouth State now sits at (2-5,2-3) on the season.
