McCahill (Highlands Ranch, CO) and sophomore Joe
Colaianni (Monroe, NY) each scored three goals and senior
Ryan Petersen (Shrewsbury, NJ) dished out five
assists as the Seahawks snapped a nine-game losing streak with a
12-8 win over Worcester State College in ECAC men's hockey action
Monday afternoon at Portsmouth Abbey Arena.
Freshman Danny Allen (Brookfield, CT) recorded
two goals and two assists, junior Patrick Bambery
(Braintree, MA) chalked up three points (2-1-3), and both senior
Jake Picard (Wellfleet, MA) and junior
Tyler Trott (Rehoboth, MA) piled up three assists
for the
Seahawks (3-16-2, 3-12-1 ECAC). Junior Mark
Rintel (Queens, N.Y.) recorded a goal and two assists for
the Lancers (5-13-3, 3-8-3 ECAC), who dropped their
second-straight.
The Seahawks scored a season-high six power play goals, and their
12 goals is the most since potting 14 in a win over Western Conn.
St. on November 16, 1996. Eight goals is the highest output of the
season for the Lancers as well. The two teams also combined for 46
penalty minutes, including 24 in the third period.
The Seahawks opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period behind goals
from Allen at 4:11, Colaianni at 14:22 and Bambery at 17:22. Junior
Ron Carlucci (Stromford, CT) got the Lancers with
a goal at 19:14 of a period which saw the visitors outshoot the
Seahawks 13-10.
Rintel cut the Seahawk lead to 4-2 with a goal 1:56 into the
second before a power play goal from Colaianni gave the Seahawks a
4-2 lead at 2:33. Goals from McCahill, sophomore Bryan
Russell (Essex Junction, VT), and McCahill put the
Seahawks in front 7-2 at 10:05 of the second period, chasing
Worcester State senior starting netminder Brian
Robinson (Groveland, MA). Following a goal by junior
Andrew Brady (Philadelphia, PA), Bambery's second
of the afternoon at 19:22 of the second gave the Seahawks an 8-3
lead heading into the third period.
The Lancers stormed out of the locker room in the third, scoring
two quick goals to make it 8-5 with 13:28 remaining. Following a
timeout, freshman Eric Spalt (Barnstable, MA)
scored his first collegiate goal at 9:22, and goals from Allen at
12:29 and Colaianni at 16:10
restored the Seahawks five-goal lead at 11-6. Brady and Rintel
scored late for the Lancers, and McCahill completed his hat trick
with an empty-net goal at 18:49.
The Lancers outshot the Seahawks 47-40 and scored on two of their
five chances with the extra man advantage.
Senior Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt.) made 39
saves to earn his first win of the season. Robinson made 12 saves
for the Lancers before being replaced after allowing seven goals on
19 shots. Freshman Michael Colcord (Gardner, MA)
finished up in goal for WSC and recorded 16 saves.
Salve Regina will entertain Fitchburg State in their last game of the season on Saturday at 6:30 while Worcester State hosts Assumption at 5:30 on Thursday and travels to Plymouth State on Saturday at 6.
