Worcester State 5, Assumption 4 OT
Fitchburg, MA --- Sophomore John Cahalane
(Tewksbury, MA) netted his second goal of the season midway through
the first overtime period, lifting Worcester State to a 5-4 victory
over Assumption College this afternoon at the IC Credit Union
Shootout.
Worcester State (1-1) will be in action again on Tuesday as it
opens MASCAC play against Plymouth State at 5:30 PM. Assumption
(0-3) will visit Stonehill College on Wednesday at 7 PM.
The Lancers used a trio of three point efforts in their first
victory of the season as Andrew Brady (Oreland,
PE), Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PN) and
Billy O’Neil (Strafford, PN) combined for
nine points on three goals and six assists. Brady led the scoring
attack with two scores and one helper, while O’Neil paced
Worcester State with three dishes. Asterito was also solid with one
marker and two assists.
Sophomore Pat O’Kane (Hollis, NH) shined for the Ice Dogs,
totaling three points on two goals and one assist while junior
Patrick Fitzgibbons (Worcester, MA) added one score and two
helpers.
Assumption jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one period and
maintained its two goal lead throughout the second frame, grabbing
a 4-2 lead at the second intermission. O’Kane led the Ice
Dogs scoring with one goal in each period, while sophomore Kevin
Glanzman (Massapequa, NY) and Fitzgibbons notched one score
each.
Throughout the third period, Worcester State rallied back, scoring
two unanswered goals to force an extra frame. Brady kick started
the Lancers scoring surge with his second goal of the season at the
12:22 mark, while Mark Rintel (Oakland Gardens,
NY) brought the game to a 4-4 deadlock just 1:32 later.
In the extra frame, Worcester continued its offensive momentum as
Cahalane netted the game-winning goal at the 2:35 mark of the
period. Cahalane secured the Lancer victory as he found the back of
the net off a feed from Tim Stalmok (Paxton, MA)
and Shaun Tribbett (Austin, TX).
Assumption held a slim 25-22 lead in shots, but Worcester State
took advantage of its extra man, converting 4-of-8 power plays.
Freshman Zach Hansen (Dexter, MI) earned the
victory for the Lancers posting 21 saves in the contest, while
senior Jamie DiGiulio (Peabody, MA) stopped 17 shots for the Ice
Dogs.
