Ice Hockey Falls To Fitchburg State, 5-2

Auburn, MA --- Fitchburg State senior Chris Riggs (Sewell, NJ) and sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA) each recorded a goal and an assist to help lead the Falcons to a 5-2 triumph over Worcester State in MASCAC men's ice hockey action this evening at Horgan Rink.

The Falcons (14-8-1, 8-7-1 MASCAC) got on the board first at the end of the opening period as junior Bryan Canter (Anchorage, AK) notched the tally at 18:34.

The Lancers (9-11-3, 5-10-1 MASCAC) would respond 44 seconds later and knot the score as junior John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) scored his team-leading 14th marker of the season.

Coming out of the locker room, Fitchburg State seized the momentum of the contest when third-year Kris Trelkeld (Centerville, OH) and Riggs scored exactly three minutes apart in the early-goings of the second period. WSU killed a pair of penalties before the stanza was completed.

The Blue and Gold cut into the lead midway though the final period as freshman Brendan Galley (Colorado Springs, CO) lit up the siren at 11:42 to make the score 3-2.

Lawler, however, gave the Falcons the advantage they would need to earn the victory as he scored their last two goals in a span of nine seconds in the waning moments of the game with the final marker coming in the form of an empty netter.

Both squads were 0-for-2 with the extra man advantage as Fitchburg State led in shots, 46-35.

Junior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, NY) improved his overall record to 10-3 by turning aside 33 shots. Third-year Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) collected 41 saves in the setback.

Both teams will return to MASCAC play on Thursday as Worcester State entertains Westfield State at 5:30 while Fitchburg State hosts Plymouth State at 7 PM.
