UMass Dartmouth Hands Men's Soccer, 2-1, Overtime Loss

N. Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth sophomore Ryland Foster-Gorbach (W. Roxbury, MA) netted the game-winning goal just 1:41 into overtime as he helped lift the host Corsairs to a 2-1 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Cressy Field.

With the win UMD improves its record to 11-3 while the Lancers slip to 1-10-2 with the loss. The decision marks the fifth straight one-goal setback this season and the seventh contest that has come down to one marker.

After enjoying a 13-4 edge in shots in the opening frame, the hosts finally took over the 1-0 lead in the 36th minute on the first goal of the year by senior Fouad Shahin (Topsfield, MA) who was assisted by junior Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal).

But third-year Alex Wolfel (Farmington, CT) helped the Blue and Gold equal the score less than four minutes into the second frame on an unassisted tally – his fourth of the season.

Both squads played to a 1-1 draw into the extra session which set the stage for Foster-Gorbach's heroics. Ferreira chipped in with his team-leading seventh helper on the game-winning marker.

UMD finished with the 29-11 edge in shots (14-6 on goal) while the Lancers led in corners, 6-3.

Senior Mike Phelan (Carver, MA) stopped five of the six shots he saw on net as freshman Tim Schmidt (Southwick, MA) registered 12 saves in the setback.

With his marker tonight, Wolfel moved into a tie with James Barkus (1971-73) for 11th on WSU's all-time scoring list (15 goals – 7 assists). He is only 10 points away from the coveted tenth spot.

The Lancers will travel to Fitchburg State on Saturday for a 10 AM contest in a key MASCAC road match-up. The Corsairs entertain Keene State and will attempt to remain unbeaten in LEC play.
