Strong Relays Pace #17 Men's Indoor Track To Fourth At Tufts Cupid Invitational

 

Medford, MA --- Sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) dashed to first in the 200 meters (22.84), helped pace the second place 4x200 meter relay and he added fourth in the 60 meters (7.08) to highlight the Worcester State men's track and field team at the Tufts Cupid Challenge this afternoon.

The Lancers scored 77 points for fourth overall which was 14 points off of Coast Guard, who claimed first prize at the meet.

Barros, who entered the weekend with the second-lowest 200 meter time Division III from last week at BU, anchored the 4x200 relay of sophomore Anthony Lawson (Randolph, MA),  senior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) and sophomore Charles Newman (Westfield, MA) as the third leg that timed 1:32.87.

The winning 4x400 relay of sophomore Marc George (Framingham, MA), Marquis Johnson (W. Hartford, CT), sophomore Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA), junior Benjamin Dussault (Assonet, MA) at anchor also placed first with a time of 3:33.42.

The 4x800 relay of freshman Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, MA) along with classmate Ariel Torres (N. Andover, MA), senior Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) and first-year Devin Luce (Milford, MA) and added second for eight points (8:46.87).

Senior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) was third overall in the preliminary round of the 60 meter hurdles (8.66) and freshman Mamudu Dennis (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) was fifth in the 60 (7.18), qualifying for the Division III New England Championships.

George was 0.04 seconds off the Division III New England standard in the 600 in sixth (1:25.58) followed by Marquis Johnson who added ninth (1:27.09), while Gannon nearly missed scoring in the 200 with ninth (23.47).

Newman was 11th in the 60 (7.31) and Scheeler finished 13th in the 1,000 (2:40.67).

In the field, senior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) and sophomore Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) were third (46-3.25/14.10m) and fourth (45-8.50/13.93m), respectively, in the shot put while Begley had a toss of sixth in the weight throw (44-5/13.54m) and Weeks was right behind in the same event with eighth (40-6.25/12.35m).

Senior Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) cleared fourth in the high jump (6-2/1.88m) and freshman Elijah Mawejje (Woburn, MA) was right behind in eighth (6-0/1.82m). Freshman Ezekiel Kyei (Oxford, MA) notched ninth in the triple jump (42-0/12.80m) and he placed 13th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.13).

Next week the Blue and Gold will compete for the conference title at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships hosted by Rhode Island College at RI Tech.
