Indoor Track & Field Runs Mary Grinaker Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed Saturday in the Mary Grinaker Invitational, hosted by Smith College.

The highlight of the day came from the women's 4x200 meter relay team, comprised of freshmen Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.), Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.), and Avonia Herbert (Sharon, Mass.), and senior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.). The quartet finished in first place in the event with a time of 1:47.69.

All four also had top seven finishes in other events on the day. MacGregor placed fifth in the 60 meter dash, followed in sixth by Grady and in eighth by Pellegrini. In the 200 meter dash, Herbert was the fifth place finisher, which MacGregor tied for seventh. Herbert also completed in the triple jump, placing sixth with a distance of 10.65 meters, while Grady was the seventh place finisher in the long jump. Senior Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) was third in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Rachel Stier (Mansfield, Mass.), Heather Turner (Ashland, Mass.), Grace Higgins (Tewksbury, Mass.), and Brenda Thomas (Worcester, Mass.) also impressed on the afternoon, placing third with a time of 4:21.64. Thomas, Higgins, and Stier also placed fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively in the 400 meter dash. Rounding out Worcester State's top-eight finishes freshman Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.), the sixth place finisher in the shot put.

On the men's side, sophomore Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.) had his second consecutive strong meet, placing sixth in both the weight throw and shot put. Senior Ian Merry (West Brookfield, Mass.) and junior Hoang Vo (Worcester, Mass.) each impressed in the pole vault on the day, finishing in third and fourth respectively with identical heights of 3.40 meters.

Sophomore Wayne Carey (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the second place finisher in the 5,000 meter run, finishing in a time of 16:24.50, while sophomore Andre Luciano (Milford, Mass.) finished fourth in the 200 meter dash at 23.40 seconds. Rounding out the Lancers was freshman Nick Iarussi (Woonsocket, R.I.), the fourth place finisher in the high jump.

The Lancers return to the track for the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University next Saturday.
