Box Score

Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State College Lancer softball team picked up their first home victory of the year Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the visiting Blazers of Elms College by the final score of, 8-3, at Rockwood Field.  The win gets the Lancers over the .500 mark at 5-4 while Elms falls to 7-6.

Worcester State got on the board in the bottom of the first inning plating three runs.  Freshman Karen Feeley (West Springfield, MA) singled home junior Ashley Nye (Marion, MA) who singled earlier in the inning for the first Worcester State run.  Sophomore Katherine Kelly (Burlington, MA) followed with a 2-run double to left center to give the Lancers a three run margin after one inning of play.

Elms chipped away with an unearned run in the top of the third inning when freshman Allie McBride (E. Providence, RI) hit a sacrifice fly scoring pitcher Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA) who singled to open the inning.

Worcester State got the run back in the bottom of the frame when junior Veronica Clark (Worcester, MA) tripled to center field and scored on a line shot by Feeley that the Blazer third baseman couldn't handle.

The Lancers tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fifth to take a, 5-1, lead when sophomore Maura Crossman (Colrain, MA) rapped a two out double to right field scoring Kelly who had singled to right center.  Worcester State scored three more in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI double by Heather Camara (Dighton, MA) and a 2 RBI single by Feeley.

Elms looked like they were headed towards a big inning in the top of the seventh when catcher Tiffany Williams (Berlin, CT) doubled to open the inning.  Tremblay tripled her home with a shot to right field.  After back to back walks loaded the bases, McBride scored Tremblay with an infield single but senior Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) came on in relief to get the last two outs and give Worcester State the, 8-3, victory.

Kelly was 3-for-4 to lead the Lancers with 2 RBI.  Feeley was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI on the day.  Williams was a perfect 3-for-3 to pace the Elms offensive attack.

Catherine Costopoulos (Tyngsboro, MA) improved to 2-0 on the year as she went 6 1/3 scattering 8 hits and giving up just a pair of earned runs.  Tremblay falls to 5-5 for Elms.

Worcester State heads to Western Connecticut on Thursday for a doubleheader.  Elms will host Thomas College on Saturday.
