Softball Splits To Open Season In Fort Myers

Fort Myers, FL --- Senior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) helped Worcester State open the 2011 campaign earning the win in the circle in a 8-1 triumph over Lasell before the Lancers fell in their second game to Fredonia State. Junior Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) and sophomore Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) each notched two base-knocks in the second game.

In the Lasell game, junior Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while sophomore Kylene Pease (Ashland, MA) was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs. Kerr and Mahoney also notched two RBIs apiece.

Mahoney got the scoring started in the first inning for the Lancers with a two-run single as Worcester State never looked back.

Mahoney notched six punchouts as she yielded just two hits after six innings.

The Lasers (0-1) got to Mahoney in the seventh after she allowed a walk and a single to start off the inning. Lasell broke up the shutout in the on an run producing single by Rachelle Haas (Middleton, MA).

Freshman Kelly Winter (Attleboro, MA) finished the game for the Blue and Gold in relief of Mahoney.

Eight of the nine batters in the order in the season-opening contest finished with least one hit.

After Fredonia State opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, WSU cut into the lead with a run in the bottom frame. Cordio tallied a three-bagger to lead things off and then second-year Howe drove her in with a sacrifice fly.

But the Blue Devils had a three-run third highlighted by a two-run blast by junior Lauren Larson (Lakewood, NY).

The Lancers would get a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by first-year Michelle Serrentino (Hudson, MA), but the WSU offense would then get blanked over the final three innings by an impressive performance by sophmore Raela Wiley (Wilson, NY).

Sophomore Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz, NY) earned her second win for the unbeaten Blue Devils (6-0). Brognano went the first four innings scattering eight hits and two earned runs while she finished with two strikeouts.

Second-year Melissa Beaudry (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) absorbed the setback as she allowed five runs on eight hits with one punchout. Classmate Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) was strong in her Lancer debut as she went the last four innings yeilding four hits and one run with four strikeouts and one walk.
