Softball Claims MASCAC Regular Season Title With Sweep Of Mass Maritime

Everson Named Co-MASCAC Softball Player of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Sophomore Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA) rapped out five hits and drove in three runs as Worcester State captured their first outright MASCAC Softball Regular Season Championship since 1987 with a twinbill sweep of Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 9-0 in the opener and 12-1 in the nightcap in a pair of five inning games.

The visiting Lancers (21-15, 12-2 MASCAC) scored at least a run in all but one inning on the afternoon, rapping out 14 hits to edge both Bridgewater State and Salem State for the conference crown and earn the top seed in next week's league championships. The Bears swept the Vikings 3-2 and 7-2 earlier this afternoon as SSU was up by just one game on the Lancers entering the day.

The title was their ninth overall for the Blue and Gold since sharing the first-ever crown with Boston State in 1976. They also were Co-MASCAC Regular Season Champions with Westfield State last season – their first since 1997.

Hassett collected three hits and two RBI in the opening game triumph for Worcester State, which also received two hits and an RBI each from senior classmates Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) and Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) as well as freshman Taylor Hanley (Wilmington, MA).

Junior Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) struck out the first 10 batters she faced while allowing just one hit over four frames to improve to 14-5 for the Lancers, who rapped out 11 opening game safeties. Freshman Katie Roy (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) combined for the shutout – the sixth time that an opponent has been blanked this season.

Junior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, MA) collected the lone single of the opener for the host Buccaneers (2-23, 0-14 MASCAC), as sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) suffered the setback inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime, allowing six earned runs and fanning three along the way.

Freshmen Kaitlyn Storro (Leominster, MA) and Roy combined for six hits and seven RBI in the nightcap victory for Worcester State, as Storro drove in four runs while Roy helped her own cause with a double, a triple and three RBI at the plate as part of a 13-hit attack.

Cordio and Hassett each recorded two base-knocks each in the second contest for the Lancers, as Roy allowed an unearned run and fanned four over the first four innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, MA) collected a pair of singles in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers, as she also allowed six earned runs and struck out three in going the distance inside the circle for the hosts. Thibeault plated the lone run for MMA in the second contest on a first-inning sacrifice fly.

Today's twinbill marked the final games of the 2012 season for Massachusetts Maritime, while Worcester State will host Trinity in a non-league twinbill on Monday beginning at 5:00 PM at Rockwood Park.
