Softball Tripped Up On The Road By Trinity In Regular Season Finale

Hartford, CT --- Trinity junior Hannah King (Keenebunk ME) tossed a pair of victories in the circle and classmate Erica Quinones (Trumbull, CT) blasted a three-run homer in the nightcap as the Bantams defeated Worcester State, 7-1 and 9-1 in five innings, in non-conference softball action this afternoon.

Trinity wraps up their 2015 campaign at 8-24 while the Lancers now stand at 21-13 entering the MASCAC Tournament. The Blue and Gold will take on the winner of the #4 Salem State vs fifth-seeded Salem State at 4 PM on Friday in the semifinal round of the league playoffs.

After the Bantams scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, the visitors knotted up the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out by freshman Danielle Cacciola (Tewksbury, MA), who plated sophomore Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI).

In the top of the sixth, the hosts finally got to freshman Julie Melanson (Gardner, MA), who had limited Trinity's lineup to seven base-knocks to that point in a tied contest. The Bantams batted around and scored six runs to go ahead 7-1.

King fanned the side looking to preserve the victory as she finished permitting one earned run on two hits to go with 14 strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Melanson (1-5) gave up seven runs (five earned) on 13 hits over her six frames of work. She also rung up three on strikes and issued two free passes.

In the nightcap, the Bantams put up two scores in the first before tacking on four more in the second – highlighted by a three-run dinger by Quinones – to take over the 6-0 advantage. Trinity added three more scores in the bottom of the third to take over the nine-run margin.

The Lancers, who had left five in scoring position after four innings, including three runners at third base, attempted a rally in the top of the fifth.

Salisbury connected on her second base-knock of the contest and then she reached second on error by the third baseman. Junior Marissa Avanzato (Pittsfield, MA) drove in Salisbury to break up the shutout bid, but King ended the twin bill with a strikeout to complete the sweep.

King fanned six and yielded six base-knocks with two walks as her record moved to 7-11. Avanzato (0-3) was saddled with the loss as she drops to 0-3. Avanzato gave up five earned runs on seven hits and she walked one.

Salisbury crossed the plate for both of Worcester State's scores in the twinbill. She moves into second on the squad in the category with 21 runs this season.
