Lancers Women’s Basketball Downs Pride

Worcester, MA- After a back and forth battle last night saw Western New England just edge out the Lancers, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (4-5, 0-0) is right back in action at Williams this afternoon as they take on the Regis Pride. Worcester looks to even out their record to round out 2024 in their final regulation game of the season.

Final

Worcester State: 65

Regis: 61

How it Happened:

The second day of the Shooting Touch Tournament saw an evenly balanced match up with the Regis College Pride and the Worcester State Lancers. The game started out with a quick layup made by sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) which would not be the only time she got to the basket on the day. This sparked an immediate back and forth as both teams were looking to gain a controlling edge. Good defense, however, only allowed for 11 points to be scored by each team, Lancers left the quarter tied with the Pride 11-11.

The second quarter was all about Smith as she was able to put up 11 points in the single ten minutes of action, accounting for more than half of what the Blue and Gold had for the game up to that point at 17. The Lancers would take a quick lead as they went on a 12 point run. Regis however would find their way back into the game as they went on a dash of their own but Worcester would leave the quarter up 24-28.

The third quarter was a thriller as both teams found themselves in a brawl fighting for the win. Senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) and senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) would come up big for Worcester State, hitting big shots to keep the Lancers lead intact. Hurynowicz would hit a big three to push the Lancers lead six in the middle of the third while St. Martin came up clutch in crunch time as she hit a big jump shot with 13 seconds left in the quarter to put Worcester State up three. The Blue and Gold would go into the final 10 with a 43-40 lead.

In the fourth quarter Worcester put on a great display of what a good unified team win looks like. The Blue and Gold had great play on both sides of the ball from all, as Smith and sophomore Hanna Lamonaco (Northbridge, MA) would come up with two huge plays for the Lancers. Smith had a huge block in the middle of the quarter to sustain the Worcester State momentum as Lomonaco would have two clutch free throws at the end of the game to put the Lancers up four and the game out of reach.

Smith would finish with 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks in the afternoon.
