Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA) notched a pair of goals to help lead Worcester State to a 3-0 triumph over Colby-Sawyer this afternoon in non-conference women’s soccer action. The contest was the first for both squads.

After much back and forth action for the first thirty minutes of the game, Clifford gave WSC a 1-0 lead when she received a cross from senior Stephanie Demake (Auburn, MA) in the 34th minute as the Lancers took advantage of a free kick opportunity.

Worcester State would continue to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the half, but freshman keeper Shayln Spencer (Natick, MA) deflected five of her seven saves of the period to keep the Lancers at bay.

Coming out of the locker room, Worcester State scored in the 10 minutes into the second stanza in the 55th minute when junior Sarah Connors (Gardner, MA) hit a rocket past Spencer to put WSC up 2-0.

Colby-Sawyer tried to make it a one-goal game for the rest of the contest, but the Lancer defense was too strong and junior goalkeeper Rachael Armenti (West Boylston, MA) recorded six of her seven total stops in the game to keep the Chargers off the board in the second period.

Clifford put the game out of reach in the 84th minute when WSC took advantage of another free kick. Freshman Daryl Powell (Beverly, MA) tapped the kick for Clifford who kicked a high arc over three defenders heads and past Spencer into the net for her second marker of the contest.

Worcester State edged Colby-Sawyer out 14-10 in shots while both were even in corners (4-4). Spencer also ended the contest with 10 saves.

The Lancers begin a series of four NEWMAC opponents when they will host cross-town rival Clark on Saturday at noon while the Chargers take-on Green Mountain tomorrow at 3:30.
