WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team won 2-0 against Salve Regina Thursday evening at John F. Coughlin Field.
With the win, the Lancers move to 2-3 on the season. The Seahawks fall to 3-4 with the loss.
The first half saw some strong opportunities for Worcester State. Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) had the first opportunity with a strong shot that just made the hands of Georgia Drake (Mashpee, Mass.) to stop the shot. The Lancers put themselves on the board when Haley Skowronski (Douglas, Mass.) unassisted put one past the Seahawks' goalkeeper. The Lancers kept pushing the ball down the field ending the half with 12 shots, 7 on goal.
The Lancers came out of the locker room ready to play when just five minutes into the second half Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) put the Lancers up 2-0 with her first goal of the season. Molly Breslin (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) had a standout shot, but Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) made the save look easy. Haley Samara (Worcester, Mass.) played strong for the Lancers, placing three shots still looking for her first goal of the season.
Spellman had eight saves for the night. Drake picked up seven saves as well in the loss.
Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday to open up conference play at MCLA. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
