Rhode Island College Hands Women's Tennis 5-4 Setback

Providence, RI --- Rhode Island College won three singles matches and a pair of doubles points to defeat Worcester State, 5-4, in Little East Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

For RIC (1-7, 1-1 LEC) Freshman Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT), senior Gaby Batek (Greenfield, RI) and junior Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) were all victorious in each of their singles matchups while Brown paired with Batek for an 8-3 win at first doubles and Belanger along with first-year Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) won at second doubles, 8-6.

The Lancers (2-3, 0-1 LEC) points came in the form of sophomore Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) who won 6-4 and 6-1 at fourth singles, junior Erin Desmarais (Gardner, MA) was triumphant, 6-1 and 6-1 at fifth singles and senior Amy Mach (Springfield, MA) was the victor at sixth singles, 6-2 and 6-3.

Desmaris and first-year Lisa Higgins (Pembroke, MA) also dispatched of their opponents, 8-3, at third doubles.

With the win, the Anchorwomen snapped a 23-game losing streak dating back to 2009.

The Blue and Gold have a busy week ahead as they will host UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 at Clark University on Tuesday before they play Salem State on Thursday at 3:30 at Shrewsbury High. They cap off the week with an away match at Anna Maria which is slated for 3 PM.
