BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's outdoor track & field opened the 2021 season at the BSU Bears Invitational on Saturday morning.
Five Worcester State student-athletes claimed the top spots in their respective events, as well as the 4x100 meter relay team of Heather Turner (Ashland, Mass.), Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.), Elena Pellegrini (Ashland, Mass.), and Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) with a time of 51.11 seconds.
Mensah and MacGregor also finished in the top two spots of the 100 meter dash, with Mensah edging out her teammate by just a one-hundredth of a second at 13.08 and 13.09 seconds respectively. MacGregor would also win the 200 meter dash on the day, finishing with a time of 27.24 seconds, just ahead of second-place Pellegrini at 27.36 seconds. Mensah was the day's top finisher in the triple jump as well at 10.10 meters.
A pair of Lancer throwers also took top honors at the meet, with Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) winning the shot put at 11.95 meters and Riley Sanderson (Leominster, Mass.) winning the javelin at 33.39 meters. Rachel Jorge (Dartmouth, Mass.) took fourth in the javelin at 24.38 meters, while Konadu was fourth in the discus at 26.19 meters.
A quartet of distance runners took top-four spots on the day as well. Senior Kyra Siano (North Attleboro, Mass.) was second in the 800 meter run at 2:33.29, and was closely followed by teammate Erica Hanlon (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who placed third at 2:36.16. In the 1,500 meter run, Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) placed second at 5:19.83, with senior Shaylee Puleo (Tewksbury, Mass.) in fourth at 5:28.72.
Worcester State will get back to the track in two weeks, traveling to Fitchburg State for the Jim Sheehan Invitational on April 10.
