Bears Sweep Volleyball 3-0 For First MASCAC Loss

Bridgewater State 3, Worcester State 0 

Bridgewater, MA --- The Bridgewater State College volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Worcester State this evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.

With the win, BSC improves to 4-13 on the season and 3-0 in the MASCAC standings.  Worcester dips to 9-11 overall and 2-1 in conference play. 

Bridgewater made quick work of the Lancers over the first two games, winning by scores of 25-13 and 25-14.   Worcester hung tough in game three and actually trailed by just two points, 21-19, late in the game.  The Bears, however, were able to shut the door by scoring four of the final five points for the 25-20 decision.

The Bears were led by junior outside hitter Julie Clerk (Acushnet, MA) who notched a match-high 11 kills to go along with five digs.  Sophomore middle hitter Shelly DePina (New Bedford, MA) contributed eight kills with three solo blocks, while junior setter Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, MA) added 28 assists and 13 digs.  Junior outside Kristina Campbell (Taunton, MA) also chipped in with seven kills.  

Senior outside hitter Lauren Saylor (Swansea, MA) paced the Lancers with seven kills, followed by Katie Figella (Feeding Hills, MA) who added five of her own. Sophomore setter Brittany Stoddard (Orange, MA) contributed 18 assists in the loss.

Bridgewater State is off until next Monday (Columbus Day) when the Bears entertain MASCAC rival MCLA at 2 PM. Worcester State will head back home where they will host the Vikings of Salem State in a conference match on Thursday, October 15th at 7 PM.
