Women's Volleyball Goes 1-1 At UMass Dartmouth Tri-Match

N. Dartmouth, MA --- Worcester State defeated Southern Maine 3-0 before they dropped a 3-1 setback to UMass Dartmouth at the UMD tri-match on Saturday.

In their first match, the Lancers (5-6) won in three straight sets 25-12, 25-8, 25-7 for the easy win against the Huskies. In the final game of the day, the Corsairs were victorious twice (25-23, 25-18) and then both squads split the last two sets with WSU winning the third, 27-25, and the hosts taking the fourth, 25-10.

Freshman Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) impressed as she hit at a .389 percentage with nine kills (9-2-18) and five service aces in the win against Southern Maine. Sophomore Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) had a team-best seven aces and five digs while junior Kristen Koles (Billerica, MA) and senior Juliana Tyo (Pepperell, MA) both combined for nine kills.

Jasper continued her torrid streak with a break-out game featuring 17 kills and two solo blocks in thier setback against UMass Dartmouth. Second-year Nicole Hanson (Dighton, MA) recorded a season-best 16 digs as O'Brien put up 11 digs. Tyo and Koles also paired to amass 10 kills.

The Lancers had seven team blocks in the loss with Tyo and senior's Katey Figella (Feeding Hills, MA), Joanne Grenier (Orange, MA) accounting for 4.5 of them.

Grenier finished the afternoon with 50 total assists, 31 of which came against the Corsairs. Greiner is averaging 21.4 assists per game and 6.35 per set.

Worcester State will play four matches in the next week. The Blue and Gold travel to Bay Path on Tuesday and Newbury on Thursday for a pair of 7 PM matchups before they finish with Salem State (1 PM) and Daniel Webster (5 PM) on Saturday at home.
