Worcester State Volleyball Drops MASCAC Quarterfinal Game to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University had three players in double figures in kills as the Owls attacked their way to a 3-0 victory over Worcester State University in the quarterfinal round of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's volleyball tournament Wednesday (Nov. 4) evening.

 

Number three-seed Westfield State improves to 15-15 overall, and the Owls will travel to North Adams, Mass., on Saturday to partake in the semifinals, and potentially championship game, all hosted at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.  The Owls will face second seeded Framingham State at 2:00 p.m. am in the semifinals. Top seed MCLA will face fourth seeded Bridgewater in the other semifinal game at 12 noon.

 

Tonight for Westfield, seniors Kendyl Haney (11 kills), Casey Howe (11 kills) and Shannon Shea (10 kills) defended their home court one last time in powering the Owls to the win.

 

The first two games were very close, with Westfield edging the Lancers by a 26-24 score in the first, rallying from an early 6-2 deficit.  Worcester led 23-22, but kills from Haney, Shea, and finally Casey Doremus accounted for three of the last four points for Westfield.

 

Westfield again held Worcester at arms' length in the second game, with a 25-23 score, and the Owls claimed the third game by a comparatively easier 25-17 margin.

 

Shea added 12 digs to go with her 10 kills, while Howe posted a strong .435 hitting percentage and totaled five blocks in the match.  Sophomore setter Courtney Ryan had 32 assists, and freshman libero Lizzie Taylor led the Owls with 22 digs.

 

For sixth-seeded Worcester State, Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) was the lone hitter in double figures with 13 kills. Jamika Townsend (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 23 assists and five kills of her own, registering a game-high .556 attack percentage. Freshman defensive specialist, Elexi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) led the team in digs with 14, while senior Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, Mass.) logged eight.Junior Valerie Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) added seven kills in there for the Lancers. 

 

The Lancers complete their season with an overall 11-16 record.
