Worcester State Wins Non-Conference Matchup against Mount Ida, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) and Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) combined for 25 kills in the Lancers' 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-19) win over non-conference opponent, Mount Ida College, in a Thursday evening matchup inside the Lancer Gymnasium.

1ST SET

Worcester State posted a 25-12 win over Mount Ida in the first set, as the Lancers registered a .385 team attack percentage. After a 1-1 score, Mount Ida gained a three point advantage with Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) at the service. The Mustangs kept their distance until Worcester State knotted the score at 6-6 on kills from King. The teams traded points until the Lancers drifted away from the Mustangs with an 8-0 run with Katrina Kangwijaya (Dunstable, Mass.) at the service. The Lancers did not allow the Mustangs to get within 10 throughout the remainder of the set. King and Chapin tallied five kills apiece in the set, while Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) tallied 11 helpers. Kangwijaya notched a set-high three service aces.  

 

2ND SET

Worcester State jumped off to a 4-0 lead with Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) at the service. The Lancers kept their distance throughout the remainder of the game and concluded the set with a 6-3 run to settle the set with a score of 25-16. King racked up a set-high six kills while Nolan helped with 13 assists. For the Mustangs, Reidy earned a team-best five kills while Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) assisted eight points.

 

3RD SET

Mount Ida held the advantage in hitting percentage .176-.075 in the closest and final set of the night. Following three ties, Mount Ida jumped ahead to a 3-point lead capitalizing on Worcester attack errors and a kill from Hanna Simpkins (Walpole, N.H.). Worcester State closed the gap once again, but kills from Bell and Reidy kept the Mustangs ahead by four (11-7). The Lancers then fought back and went on a 6-0 run to take the lead and go ahead 13-11 with Leavens at the service. Worcester State would hold a slight lead until Rachel Colombo (Wallkill, N.Y.) knotted the score at 16-16 with a kill. Worcester State would score the next two points and hold the lead throughout, as they ended the set with a 7-2 run. Worcester State's Chapin and Mount Ida's Reidy each registered for kills in the third.  

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • King and Chapin led the Lancers offensively with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Chapin marked a match-high .588 hitting percentage in the win. She also led the team in blocks (4) and punched in two service aces. King notched another double-double as she also picked up 12 digs.
  • Worcester State's offense was facilitated by Nolan who notched 32 assists in the win.
  • The Mustang's offense was guided by Reidy who tallied 10 kills with a .320 hitting percentage.
  • Mount Ida's Bell recorded 23 assists and picked up a team-high nine digs in the setback.
  • Worcester State held an 11-2 advantage in service aces. Both Leavens and Kangwijaya notched three each.
  • Overall, Worcester State marked a .258 team hitting percentage, while the Mustangs sat at .117.

Worcester State returns to the Lancer Gymnasium tomorrow (Oct. 27) for a tri-match with Nichols and Fitchburg State, beginning at 4 p.m. The Mustangs host St. Joseph's and Johnson & Wales on Saturday (Oct. 28) to wrap up the regular season.
