Volleyball Wins Twice at Hall of Fame Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University volleyball team snagged a pair of victories on Saturday at the Hall of Fame Invitational on the campus of Smith College. The Lancers opened the day by defeating Wheaton College 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-16), before rounding out the day with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-9, 25-27, 25-23) victory over Plymouth State.

With the wins, the Lancers improve to 17-9 on the season, and round out the two-day tournament with a record of 2-1.

The Lancers opened the day with a convincing sweep of regionally-ranked Wheaton. Senior Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) had a huge outing in the day's opening match, recording 15 kills with just two errors on 22 attempts for an attack percentage of .591. Senior Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) led the Lancer defense with 18 digs to go along with a pair of service aces.

Worcester State kept the ball rolling in its second match of the day, picking up the four-set victory. Senior Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) paced the Lancer offense with a 14-kill performance to lead all players. She was followed closely by fellow senior Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) with 13 kills and 12 digs for the match's lone double-double. Junior Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) put down 12 kills to round out the offensive leaders for Worcester State. Leavens had another huge performance on the defensive side of the ball for the Lancers, recording 31 digs in the match.

For her performance over the two days, Leavens was named to the Hall of Fame Invitational All-Tournament Team at the day's conclusion.

Next up for the Lancers, they'll look to carry their momentum into a non-conference matchup at Anna Maria on Tuesday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Fuller Activities Center.
