Womens Cross Country Captures Jim Sheehan Invitational Title

Fitchburg, MA --- Sophomore Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) captured second place with a time of 21:55 to help lead Worcester State University to a first place finish at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Lancers captured 10 of the top 15 spots to score a total of 22 points on the course that covered 5,000 kilometers (3.1 miles). The win for the Blue and Gold was the first since they won the Jim Sheehan Classic in 2004.

The other finishers were Eastern Connecticut (53), Fitchburg State (76), Franklin Pierce (93) and Anna Maria (130) as the Warriors were paced by top finisher Amanda Quinones (Trumbull, CT).

For WSU, junior captain Maura Withington (W. Palm Beach, FL) added third (22:07) followed by sophomore Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) who took fourth (22:10) as freshman Kelsey Cartwright (Bridgewater, MA) and Alison Hickey (Easton, MA) notched sixth (22:24) and seventh place (22:26), just two seconds apart.

Second-year Kristina Richard (Peabody, MA) finished sixth (22:49) while junior captain Meg Plant (Franklin, MA), freshmen teammates Jenna Pickard (Peabody, MA), Ali Barret (Hingham, MA) and Christina Schaffer (Atkinson, NH) each took home 11th (22:55), 12th (22:56), 13th(23:00) and 14th (23:16), respectively.

The Lancers will compete again next Saturday when they head for the UMass Dartmouth Shiners Invitational.
