Hinkell and Lucier Selected MASCAC Baseball Players of the Week

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Worcester State junior catcher Johno Hinkell and senior right hander Joey Lucier have been named MASCAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Both were honored for their contributions in helping the Lancers go 4-1 this past week.

Hinkell, a product of North Adams, MA, batted .500 (6-for-12) with four homers, eight runs scored and 13 runs batted in which included a pair of round trippers in a 14-6 triumph over nationally-ranked WPI and a three-run homer in a 9-8 13-inning setback to Babson.

Hinkell currently leads the team with a .469 batting average and 15 runs scored while he ties for the team lead with 16 RBIs. Hinkell is tied for first in the MASCAC in homers (4), tied for second in RBIs and he is fourth overall in total bases (32).

Lucier, who hails from Brockton, MA, was sensational on Saturday as he tossed a complete game three-hitter and fanned 10 in a 3-1 victory over Southern Vermont. After allowing an unearned run to cross the plate in the second frame, he would set down 14 of the last 18 batters that he would see in the game.

Lucier is currently 2-1 on the season and he leads the pitching staff in strikeouts (23) while he is second in innings pitched (20.2). Lucier is second in the conference in strikeouts and appearances (6) and he is tied for third in innings.

Lucier started the season sixth on the Worcester State’s all-time strikeout list with 129 punchouts and in the past two weeks he has moved into third place as he has fanned 152 in 171.1 career innings. Along the way he has passed Jeff Decoteau (1998-00; 133), Tim Stronach (2004-06; 135) and WSC Hall of Famer Bill Cronan (1956-62; 148).

Both Hinkell and Lucier were first-team All-MASCAC selections last season.

Worcester State has debuted at seventh in the first New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association coaches’ poll of the season. The Lancers defeated the #5 Engineers on Thursday before they lost to the #2 Beavers on Sunday. WSC is one spot behind conference rival Westfield State who is ranked sixth.

The Blue and Gold will entertain UMass Boston at 3:30 on Thursday at Assumption and open up their MASCAC slate with Mass Maritime on Friday at 2 PM.
