McCarthy Earns Spot on WACBA All-Star Second Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's sophomore forward Shaun McCarthy (Oxford, Mass.) has been named to the 2017-18 Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) All-Star Second Team, as announced by Jen Toland of the Worcester Telegram last week.

 

Voters included sports information directors or primary contacts from each of the nine NCAA schools in Worcester County, including Division I Holy Cross and Division II Assumption, as well as members of the local media.

 

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference Second Team recipient, McCarthy, not only led his team in numerous categories, but also led his conference in points (469), points per game (18.8), points per 40 minutes (27.8), and field goals made (172). He had the second-best shooting percentage in the conference at 60.6% (172-284). McCarthy was 6th in the conference with total rebounds (149) and ninth in the conference with an average of six per game.

 

This season, McCarthy posted a career-high of 34 points in the Lancers' setback to Bridgewater State, registered a career-high 12 rebounds in games against Sage and Framingham State. He also notched five double-doubles throughout the season.

 

WACBA major award winners included Marcos Echevarria from Nichols (WACBA Men's Basketball Player of the Year), Matthew Kelly of Assumption (WACBA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year), and Nichols' head coach Tom Glynn (WACBA Men's Basketball Coach of the Year).
