Men's Soccer Blanks Trinity College, 1-0

Worcester, MA --- In the 33rd minute Worcester State senior Justin Biela (Bridgewater, MA) received a pass from sophomore Chris Sanborn (Holden, MA) and broke through the defense scoring from 20-yards out, giving the Lancers the only goal they would need to beat Trinity College, 1-0, at Coughlin Field in non conference men's soccer action.

Before Biela gathered the pass, he jostled for position against the tough Bantams' defense. Sanborn's pass was directed only where his teammate could get it, allowing Biela to break free to score the goal.

The Bantams (0-1-1) had a chance early in the second half in the 53rd minute to knot the score on a free kick by fourth-year Wesley Updike (Cambridge, MA) just outside the box. However, the kick was blocked by a Worcester State wall of defenders stopping the chance.

Lancers (2-2) senior goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Webster, MA) was excellent in net, stopping eight shots as he massed his second consecutive shutout and the 11th of his career. His counterpart, senior Grant Schonberg (Mendham, NJ), made four saves.

Trinity maintained the upper hand in momentum for much of the game, outshooting the Blue and Gold 18-8 (13-5 in first half) and having the advantage in corner kicks, 3-2.

Both teams played a physical game, amassing 38 combined fouls, with Trinity holding the 21-17 edge – 13 alone in the second half.

The two squads begin conference play this weekend on Saturday at 1 o'clock. The Lancers travel to MCLA for a MASCAC battle while the Bantams head to Williamstown, MA to take on Williams in their NESCAC opener.
