Men's Soccer Defeated By Salem State, 5-1

Salem, MA --- Salem State men's soccer team defeated MASCAC foe Worcester State by a score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  The Vikings were led by senior Rafael Santos (East Boston, MA) who scored two goals and had two assists.

Salem State improves to 9-6-0 on the year while improving to 4-2 in league play while the Lancers fall to 6-7-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.

The two teams entered the half at a scoreless tie, but Salem jumped out in the second stanza and never looked back.  Just five minutes into the second, Maxime Mondestin (Salem, MA) scored the opening tally on Santos' first assist of the afternoon.

Santos would then set up classmate Owen Quane (Weymouth, MA) just 10 minutes later.  The Vikings would add another goal at the 68th minute on Mondestin's second goal of the game to make the score 3-0.

The Lancers found the back of the net to make the score 3-1 on a goal from sophomore Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT).  Wolfel dribbled his way through Vikings defenders to give Worcester their only goal of the game at 70:46.

The Vikings would respond shortly after, as Santos scored his second goal of the game.  Santos took advantage of a Worcester miscue, as a defender screened his own goalie, to make the final score 5-1.

Salem State outshot Worcester 20-11 while both teams had four corner kicks each.

Scott Hall (Waltham, MA) turned away seven shots for the victory in net, while Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) made 11 saves for the visitors.

The Vikings will play again next when they host non-conference rival Southern Maine on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.  The Lancers will return to the field on Wednesday night when they host cross-town rival WPI at 7:00 PM.
