Women's Soccer Picks Up First Win of the Season

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team won 2-0 against Gordon College Tuesday evening at John F. Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Lancers move to 1-3 on the season. The Scots fall to 2-1 with the loss.

The first half was controlled by Worcester State, the offense steadily working their way to the visitor's half of the field. At the 28th minute Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.) made her way through the defense with a great opportunity, but a great defensive save from McKenna Feller (Puyallup, Wash.) kept the Lancers scoreless. Mignon had another opportunity when Jordan Bailey (Monson, Mass.) sent her a ball that she headed right into the net to put the Lancers up 1-0.

A yellow card presented to Savannah Metz (New Cumberland, Pa.) put the Lancer offense in prime position to get back on the board. Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) took the kick and her ball found the hand of the visiting Scots in the box. Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) took the penalty kick and sailed it past Tori Paine (Northbridge, Mass.) to put the Lancers up 2-0. The Scots tried to answer when Shelby Jones (Greenville, N.C.) broke through the Lancer defense with a shot on net, but Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) was solid between the posts and stopped the shot to keep the Scots scoreless.

Spellman had four saves for the night. Paine picked up four saves as well in the loss.

Worcester State will be back in action on Thursday when they play Salve Regina University. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
