Women's Tennis Recognized For Having Top 2011-12 Grade Point Average

The Worcester State women's tennis team was recently honored for their outstanding efforts in the classroom as they posted a 3.37 grade point during the 2011-12 academic year.

In recognition of having the highest team GPA within the athletics department, several members of the squad were handed certificates of achievement during the halftime of the women's basketball contest on Tuesday, February 5 as a part of "National Girls and Women In Sports Day".

"I'm very glad that our team is being recognized by the department for the dedication that they put in off the court," said second-year head coach Albana Xhemollari.

During the 2011-12 academic year, seven of nine student-athletes had a GPA above a 3.0 including current juniors Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) while the returning sophomores were Miranda Biron (Webster, MA), Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) and Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT).

Within the last month, Michanczyk, Sarkis, Tomasetti along with freshman classmates Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA), Paige Moriarty (Agawam, MA) and Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) were all lauded for being selected to the MASCAC Fall All-Academic Team for achieving a 3.20 cumulative or semester based GPA during the past semester.

The squad aims to finish out the spring on a high note and repeat as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic institution for maintaining a year-long cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.

Michanczyk and Sarkis were both honored for posting a semester average of 3.50 or higher and the Lancers boasted the most student-athletes to receive ITA Scholar Athlete laurels in the Little East Conference.
