Women's Indoor Track Earns Second Place At Tufts Invitational

Medford, MA --- Junior Briana Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and sophomore Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA) both reset school records in their respective events to help the Worcester State women's indoor track and field team take home second place at the Tufts Invitational.

The host Jumbos edged out the Lancers (146.33) for the top spot with 173.33 points.

In the trials, Wise eclipsed the school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.93 as she bested teammate Mara Kralian's (N. Grafton, MA) mark by .01 of a second set last year at the Open New England's. Wise would eventually finish the event in first in the 60 with a time of 7.89 before she also took home the top spot in the 200 (26.21).

Deininger also scorched the track with a blistering time of 9.37 in the pre-qualifying round as she eclipsed her own time set last semester at the Harvard Open (9.44). Deininger would clock 9.38 in the finals for the second place spot as she also added third in the 60 (8.06).

Kralian would finish her day recording third in the long jump (4.98m/16-04.25), fourth in the 60 (8.11) and fifth in the 200 (27.09).

The sprinters were also paced by freshman Liz Bodensieck (Raynham, MA) and senior Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, MA) who each timed sixth (27.57) and eighth (28.10) in the 200, respectively.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Wise, Kralian, Rafferty and first-year Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA) also placed first (1:58.49). Freshman Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA) also finished at the top in the long jump (5.03m/16-06).

Sophomore Alison Hickey (Easton, MA) sprinted to second in the 800 (2:34.14) while classmate Ali Barrett (Hingham, MA) wasn't far behind in seventh (2:37.84). Barrett would also place third in the 5,000 (19:46.82).

The distance group was also paced by second-year Kelsey Cartwright (Bridgewater, MA) who finished 11th in the mile (5:39.19) as junior Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) added 11th in the 3,000 (11:32.54).

In the field, sophomore Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME) tossed third in the shot put (11.88m/39-11.75) while freshman Shannon Trybus (Bondsville, MA) qualified for the Division III New Englands with third in the weight throw (13.01m/42-09.25).

Second-year Megan Taylor (Danvers, MA) had a jump of 1.47 meters in the high jump (4-09.75) as classmate Amanda Holden (Lunenburg, MA) was fifth with the same height. Holden and Hodgerney were fifth (9.68m/31-09.25) and sixth (9.67m/31-08.75), respectively,

Sophomore Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) would place sixth in the shot put (10.83m/35-06.50) and teammate Marlene Christenson (Danvers, MA) was sixth in the weight throw (12.47m/40-11). Freshman Therese Morss (Marion, MA) tacked on seventh place in the long jump (4.65m/15-03.25).

The 4x400 meter relay team of Hodgerney, Taylor along with freshman classmates Alexandria McMahon (E. Longmeadow, MA) and Kim West (Harvard, MA) wrapped up the meet with a third-place time of 4:20.53.

Next Saturday the Blue and Gold will head north and compete at the UNH Invitational.
