Intramural Floor Hockey Rules

Equipment

  • Each player must present a valid WSU ID before each contest to be eligible to participate - No Exceptions.
  • There will be no jewelry, hard casts, or any other hard protruding pieces on your body. Athletic attire must be worn and sneakers that do not scuff must be worn.
  • Goalies must wear all protective equipment provided by the intramural staff. Sticks and pucks will also be provided. Players who are not the goalie may use their own protective eye wear and/or mouth guard if they choose. Players cannot use their own sticks.

General Participant Play

Participants are not allowed to play in a manner that is potentially dangerous or reckless. Safety for all our participants is our number one priority. Any action(s) that is deemed dangerous and/or reckless by the game's official or the Intramural Sport Supervisor will result in either an unsportsmanlike penalty or an ejection depending on the severity of the action. Players should consider this rule their warning not to play in a dangerous or reckless manner.

Game Play

  • Each game will consist of three, ten minute periods with a short break in between periods. The clock will run continuously and will only stop on injuries and whistles. Following a clock stoppage, play will resume with a faceoff.
  • Each team will consist of six players including the goalie. Teams may start with five players. Teams may only continue games with less than five players if players lost are due to penalties issued during the game.
  • Every period begins with a faceoff at center court. The floor will be marked with a goalie box. Face-offs will occur when; the ball leaves the playing surface, the net is moved, the ball is frozen by the goalie, injury occurs or there is a penalty.
  • Substitutions can be made at any time during the game. A player must leave the floor completely before someone can enter play.
  • The puck may be advanced by the blade of the stick or by kicking it. A goal may not be scored by kicking or throwing the ball into the net. If the puck is in the air, a player may catch it, but must return it immediately to the floor and continue play.
  • A goal is scored when the puck completely crosses the goal line before time expires. No offensive player or offensive player’s stick are allowed to enter the goal or crease before the puck enters the crease. This will result in a penalty.
  • Teams will be awarded two timeouts per game.

Goalie Rules

The goalie may use any part of their body or equipment to stop the puck while they are in the goalie crease. If they possess the puck for more than three seconds it will result in a faceoff. Once the goalie leaves the crease they are subject to the same rules as floor players.

If the net is moved during a play, a whistle will be blown and a face off will occur. If a member of the defense intentionally moves the net to stop the offenses advance it will result in a penalty shot.

Penalties

Penalty time served is dictated by the severity of the penalty. Most penalties will result in a face-off at the opponent’s end, but can be as severe as an ejection. Penalties are included but not limited to:

  • Personal Misconduct
  • Equipment Abuse
  • Checking
  • High Sticking
  • Tripping
  •  Holding
  •  Elbowing
  • Delay of Game
  • Pushing
  • Hooking

Players will serve their time next to the scorer’s table and the offending team will play with a player down until the full time is served. If any player accumulates a total of eight penalty minutes during the game they will be ejected and have to meet with the Intramural Director prior to their next game.

Overtime

  • Games during the regular season may end in a tie.
  •  During playoffs, a two minute golden goal over time period will be played with a continuous clock.
  • If the game is still tied after one overtime period it will result in a shootout.
    • Players will alternate taking the puck from center court, and taking a shot at the opposing goalie.
    • Each team will be given five shots.
    • If the game is still tied, teams will alternate taking one shot apiece to determine the winner.
    • During shootouts, no player may shoot twice until every member of the team has shot once.
    • Goalies are not allowed to shoot during shootouts.
  • Teams will be awarded an extra timeout for all overtime periods.
