Buzzards Bay, MA --- 93 Worcester State student-athletes have been named to the 2013 MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team as announced by Media Relations Director Emily Diekelmann. 670 total student-athletes were named by the conference as the Lancers had the fourth-most student-athletes earn the prestigious accolade.

To be named to the all-academic squad a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester based grade point average during the fall semester.

"As much as we celebrate the great accomplishments of our student-athletes in competition, we are just as proud of their outstanding achievements in the classroom," said Interim Senior Associate Athletic Director John Meany.

Among Worcester State sports, the softball team had 12 out of their 16 members recognized while 11 out of 19 on the men's golf squad were honored. In addition, 23 out 40 on the women's outdoor track & field team were all recipients of certificates.

Fourth-year recipients on the Spring MASCAC All-Academic team include Kurt Sabacinski (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian - BSB), Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA - SB) and Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA - WTRACK).

Ironically, the trio were distinguished with this year's Senior Male and Female "Peg Nugent" Awards for their excellence in the field and in the classroom at the Annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet in May.

Three-year honorees included seniors Stacey Doherty (Westford, MA - WLAX), Joe Piscitelli (Oxford, MA - BSB) and Briana Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat - WTRACK) along with juniors Ali Barrett (Hingham, MA - WTRACK), Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA - WTRACK) and Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, ME - WTRACK).

Overall, 76 spring student-athletes were honored with laurels while an additional 17 winter student-athletes were added for their strong performances during the second semester.

The number of spring athletes on the 2013 MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team marks the highest since the league began listing its all-academic honor roll on a season-by-season basis during the 2009-10 academic year.
