Winter Haven, FL --- Senior Matt Hart (N. Easton,
MA) went 6-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBIs while freshman
teammates Tyler Metcalf (Bellingham, MA) and
Phil Recco (Boston, MA) each notched their first
career wins as Worcester State swept SUNY Purchase this afternoon
13-3 and 9-3. The Lancers evened up their record to 4-4 while the
Panthers slip to 3-8.
In game one Hart was a home-run shy of the cycle after he singled
in the first, hit a triple in the second and registered a double in
the third inning. He ended the first contest 3-for-4 with three
plated runs and two trips to home plate.
Worcester State jumped onto the board with a quick 7-0 lead in the
top of the first highlighted by an two-run singles by Nick
Caparell (Attleboro, MA) and Jason
Sanderski (Millbury, MA).
The Lancers added to their lead with a pair of runs on RBI singles
by freshman Ben Mullin (Burlington, MA) and
Hart.
SUNY Purchase cut into the lead after they touched Metcalf for a
two-run double by freshman Adam Hoyle (Anaheim Hills, CA). Metcalf
would end his start going five innings giving up three runs, three
hits with one strikeout and a pair of walks.
Worcester State added four more runs over the last three innings to
cruise ahead for the easy victory. Panthers first-year starter CJ
Bula (Bronx, NY) went 1 1/3 innings giving up seven runs on eight
hits while he added a pair of punch-outs in the loss.
Caparell and Mullin led the Lancers with four teammates who tallied
at least two hits. Caparell (2-for-4) ended the morning twinbill
with two runs scored and four RBIs while Mullin was a perfect
3-for-3 as he crossed the plate three times and chipped in with a
plated run.
In game two the Blue and Gold was up by the identical score of 7-0
by the end of the first inning highlighted by two-run singles by
junior classmates Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA)
and Nick Dortona (Malden, MA).
SUNY Purchase answered with a run in the second on an RBI single by
senior Kyle Saud (Jesup, GA).
WSC went up 8-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Shane Coakley (Spencer, MA).
Recco was effective over his first four innings giving up just one
run while scattering four hits, but then he ran into trouble in the
top of the fifth after he hit a batter and walked to next to start
the frame. Recco was relieved by freshman Robert
Foley (Belchertown, MA) who promptly struckout his first
two, but he then allowed a two-run single to Holyle make the score
8-3. After handing out a free pass to the next batter Foley
finished the inning on a ground-out to first.
Over the next two and a half innings the Lancers would put the game away with a pair of runs while Foley and classmate Devin Bussiere (S. Dennis, MA) combined to retire the next six batters to end the contest.
The Lancers pounded out 12 base-hits in the victory as at least
11 teamates ended the contest with a single.
Worcester State will take a day off and then play McDaniel at 9 AM.
Sophomore Bob Devito (Webster, MA) will get the
nod for his third start of the 2009 campaign.
