Ice Hockey Falls, 3-2, In MASCAC Opener With UMass Dartmouth

New Bedford, MA --- UMass Dartmouth sophomore Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirsk, Russia) and senior Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA) netted markers on third-period power plays to break a tie game as they helped lead the Corsairs to a 3-2 win over Worcester State in MASCAC men's ice hockey action this evening at the Hetland Ice Arena.

With the contest knotted at 1-1 at the 6:43 mark in the third, Antipin took a pass from freshman Swann Boisvert (Blainville, Quebec) to help the hosts take over a one-goal advantage.

Less than three minutes later, UMass Dartmouth (1-1-1, 1-0 MASACAC) took advantage of a five on three situation and netted a key insurance marker for the 3-1 game.

Junior Taylor Laneville (Edmonds, WA) helped Worcester State (0-4, 0-1 MASCAC) get back into the game with his second tally of the contest with 2:22 on the clock in the third on a pass from sophomore Nathan Stanley (Meridan, ID).

But the Corsairs held off a late charge by the visitors that saw WSU pull its goalie at the 1:01 mark in favor of the extra attacker. However, the Lancers could fire off a quality shot and UMD used a tenacious defensive front to hold on for the win.

Lanville originally helped the Blue and Gold stake the 1-0 advantage with 14:32 off the board in the opeing frame. He was assisted by freshman Joe White (Wonder Lake, IL) and second-year Brenton Dyok (Rocklin, CA) on the play.

After junior netminder Taylor Fant (Boise, ID) held off a six-shot power play at the beginning of the second period, the Lancers failed to capitalize with a pair of opportunites of their own.

Just before the end stanza, Corsair junior Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA) broke for the net on a breakaway, following a nifty pass at the blue line from classmate Greg Girtatos (Tynsboro, MA) to tie the game up 1-1 with 36 ticks left in the middle frame.

UMD third-year goalkeeper Ryan Williams (Milton, Ontario) stopped 22 shots while Fant ended his night collecting 27 saves for WSU.

Overall, the hosts outshot the Lancers, 30-24, and held a 24-17 edge in the final two periods alone.

Despite yielding a pair of markers with the extra man advantage, WSU held their opponents to two-for-eight on power plays while the Blue and Gold were one-for-five themselves.

Worcester State hosts unbeaten Westfield State in their home opener on Thursday at 5:30. The Corsairs travel to Salem State for a 2 o'clock matchup on Saturday.
