Men’s Ice Hockey Ends in 2-2 Draw at Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's ice hockey game against Fitchburg State University ended in a 2-2 tie Saturday evening inside the Wallace Civic Center.  With the tie, both team's records slide to 1-3-1 and 1-1-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

The Lancers got off to a quick start in the first period as the Lancers outshot the Falcons 11-5 in the stanza. Worcester's Andy DeAngelis (Poughquag, N.Y.) put the Lancers up on the scoreboard just  1:53 into the game for his first collegiate goal. The Blue and Gold added to their lead in the 14th minute when Mike Moran (Milford, Mass.) scored a shorthanded goal, to up the score to 2-0. However, just seconds later Fitchburg State's Justin Plumhoff (Ashburn, Va.) cut the Lancers lead in half seconds later on a goal assisted by Jordan Furlane (Oakville, Ont.) and Joshua Larson (Fredricksburg, Va.).

Fitchburg State came back with, what proved to be, the last goal of the game as Jon Johannesson (Red Lake, Ont.) scored a goal on a power play opportunity, late in the second period.

Both teams' defense and goaltenders kept off any goals throughout the last period, and two overtime periods. Worcester State's goalkeeper, Cory Lignelli (Glastonbury, Conn.) tallied 27 saves throughout the contest, while Fitchburg's Charles Jakobsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) stopped 23 in the 65 minutes played.

The game saw a total of 96 minutes of penalty minutes (48 PIM per team). The Falcons were able to capitalize on one of seven power play opportunities, while the Lancers went 0-for-7.

Next up, the Lancers host Westfield State in an 8:30 p.m. game on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Hart Center.
