Lancers Fall to Panthers in Conference Battle

Worcester, MA- In a final match before the Thanksgiving break, the Lancers travelled north to Plymouth State in a rematch with the conference's top seeded Plymouth State. The first meeting of these two teams saw the Panthers come away with a 9-1 victory. Worcester looked to settle the score in their second of three regular season matches the team will have this season.

Final

Worcester State: 1

Plymouth State: 8

Worcester State had a chance early in the first period when the Panthers were docked with interference penalty to give Worcester the man advantage. After peppering the Panthers goalie with shot after shot, Worcester State was unable to capture the early goal to set the pace. The first fourteen minutes of action were a scoreless back and forth tug of war before Plymouth cracked the stalemate with an opening goal. With just over a minute left in the first the Panthers tapped in goal number two to send the teams into the first intermission with Worcester State down 2-0.

Plymouth State would keep the intensity up at the start of the second with six straight shots before a tripping penalty would provide the Lancers with a man advantage again, but a misplayed puck would see the Panthers take the puck down the other end for goal number three. A similar script would occur in the 12' minute with both teams playing with four on the ice after a Plymouth penalty, that would see the Panthers snag the puck and work their way down the ice for goal number four. With just about a minute a half remaining, the Panthers would extend the lead to five, but Worcester would not sit back quietly, finding the back of the net with just 20 seconds remaining in the period when sophomore Shane Prifrel (Inver Grove Heights, MN) would send in a crisp shot off passes from juniors Maxwell Tucker (Kalamazoo, MI) and Martin Dlugolinsky (Stara Lubovna, Slovakia). During the settling in from the goal Worcester defense took a back step allowing Plymouth to sneak down the ice and knock in goal number 6 just 15 seconds later to send the game into the second intermission with the score 6-1.

The third period would find Plymouth tack on two more goals as the Lancers struggled to find a break in the Panthers defense falling to the Panthers 8-1.

Junior Jakub Kubik (Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic) started the game for Worcester State making 41 saves while senior Anthony Shrum (North Shores, MI) would step in and add another two saves on the night.

Worcester State Men's Ice Hockey (1-5, 1-4) returns to action next Thursday when the team travels to Salem State for a 7pm puck drop.
