Men's Soccer Earns Hard-Fought 2-1 Triumph over Bridgewater State

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Chris Sanborn (Holden, MA) and senior Justin Biela (Bridgewater, MA) each recorded goals to help lead Worcester State to a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater State in MASCAC men's soccer action this evening at Coughlin Field.

The Bears (4-4-1, 1-1-1 MASCAC) came out of the gate scorching as they fired off five consecutive shots over the first 20 minutes of the period to control play.

But then the Blue and Gold (3-5-1, 1-1-1 MASCAC) scored on their first shot of the game in the 26th minute on a corner kick header by Sanborn from freshman Michael Jordan (Ludlow, MA). This was the Sanborn's first collegiate marker.

Worcester State added their second goal of the game in the 83rd minute when Biela launched a shot from the top of the box, for his second tally of the season courtesy of classmate Julian Morales (Bogota, Columbia).

Bridgewater State had two excellent chances to break the shutout in the second half.

In the 68th minute sophomore Jamie Sinno (Foxboro, MA) broke through the Lancer defense when he launched a shot that went just to the right of the open net. In the 85th minute senior Mike Fraser (Marshfield, MA) launched a blast that was rejected by senior goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) right to fourth-year Dan Roberts (Braintree, MA), but Roberts bid was kicked out by Sanborn.

BSU's lone goal came with 10 seconds on the clock as the tally was scored in desperation. Freshman Steve McAvoy (Walpole, MA) scored the first goal of his career on an assist by senior Donald Flores (Cranston, RI) from the left side of the net.

Wilga made four saves while junior Joe Parsons (Springfield, MA) made six for the Bears.

Bridgewater State held a 16-10 advantage in shots (7-3 1st half) and in corner kicks (6-4).

Both teams' next games will be this Wednesday versus non-conference opponents.  Worcester State will host Western Connecticut at 7 o'clock, while Bridgewater will travel to Curry for a 6 PM tilt.
