Worcester State Men’s Soccer Tops Rhode Island College in Home Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – After falling behind in the first half, the Worcester State University Lancers men's soccer team lifted over the Rhode Island College Anchormen 3-1 in their home opener on Tuesday night.

In the first half, the Lancers outnumbered Rhode Island College in shots 10-6. Though, the Anchormen were the only ones with a digit on the scoreboard. Rhode Island College's Komla Dogbey succeeded in scoring the first goal of the season against the Lancers in the 25th minute on a battle with Worcester State's goalie, Tim Schmidt (Southwick, Mass.).

After trailing by one in the first half, freshman forward, Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.), knocked out three points on the night, scoring the first goal in the second half to tie the score up with the Anchormen 1-1, while also adding in an assist for the second Lancer goal of the night.

Worcester State took the lead with the second goal in the 58th minute, as Brasil crossed the ball from the right side about 10 yards out, and sophomore forward, Etjon Rapi (Worcester, Mass.), had a nice shot right in front of the goal for his first goal of the season.

Not even three minutes later, sophomore midfielder, Andre Ipojuca (Saugus, Mass.), received a long pass from senior defender, Alfred Sogja (Shkoder, Albania), and broke away to score the Lancers' final goal, making the score 3-1 Lancers.

Worcester State's goalie, Schmidt, begins the season with a win, and recorded five saves (0.833) against the Anchormen's offense.

The Lancers start their season out with a 1-0 record, while Rhode Island College falls to a 0-1 record to begin the 2015 season.

Next up, Worcester State will face Clark University Friday night under the lights at John F. Coughlin in the Worcester City Tournament. The Worcester City Tournament will conclude on Sunday with two games played at Worcester Polytech Institute.
