Men’s Soccer Forced into Overtime by Clark in Opening Night of Worcester City Tournament

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University Lancers were forced into overtime by the Clark University Cougars in the opening night of the Worcester City Tournament, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

Worcester State was first to get up on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, as sophomore Jacob Jess debuted his first goal as a Lancer. A long ball was shot ahead down the field, which led to a two-versus-two formation. Freshman Bryan Brasil then shaped a perfect pass 10 yards out on the right side for Jess to land in the net.

In the second half, the Lancers had a couple opportunities to score with some long breakaways, but struggled to put a security goal on their backs.

With 7:49 left on the clock in the second, a foul was called on Worcester State inside the penalty box. This allowed the Cougars an opportunity at a penalty kick, from where they missed the kick, but were able to score on the deflection off of Worcester State's goalie, senior Tim Schmidt's glove.

The clock then dwindled down to zero, and forced both teams into overtime. Neither team was able to score in the sudden-death round, generating a tie as the end result.

Worcester State Lancer's head coach, Jason Willis, said, "It wasn't our best game, but I am proud of the guys because they didn't give up."

Throughout the night, the Cougars exceeded the Lancers in shots 20-8. Though, the Lancers' shot percentage was .125 versus Clark's .050. Worcester State tallied two shots on goal, coming from Jess and sophomore Matthew Dent.

Worcester State will look to improve upon their 1-0-1 record in the finale of the Worcester City Tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the WPI campus. They will, in fact, face the WPI Engineers for the final matchup.
