
Truong Earns MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week Accolades
Men's Track Maintains Fourth In USTFCCCA Composite New England Regional Index
Medford, MA --- Sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) took home first in the 60 meters (7.09), fourth in the long jump (21-05.25/6.53m) and sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.93) to help lead the Worcester State men's indoor track and field team to sixth place at the Tufts Stampede Invitational.
The first-place 4x200 meter relay team which ran a school-record time of 1:31.82 and was comprised of junior Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA), sophomore's Stephen Gannon (Foxboro, MA) and Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) along with freshman Jerome Drane (Uxbridge, MA) won the event with a school-record time of 1:31.82.
The 4x400 team of Rafael, Gannon and senior teammates Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) and Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) placed fourth (3:27.65) while Rafael and Gannon placed sixth (23.28) and eighth (23.40), respectively, in the 200.
With this mark in the 60 meters, the Lancers have three student-athletes in the top 15 of the Division III New England standings with Gibson (6.94 at Brown), Truong and Curtis (7.14 at Brown).
The 4x200 relay team is fifth in the ECAC Division III rankings and the 4x400 is ninth overall on the DIII New England chart.
In the field, junior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) cleared third in the high jump (6-2) and sophomore Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) tossed eighth in the shot put (44-0.75/13.43m).
To lead the distance group, senior Kerry Sabanty (Stoughton, MA) chipped in with eighth in the 600 (1:25.73) while Mazeika and sophomore Patrick Bova (Princeton, MA) were seconds apart in the 1,000 in 11th (2:38.76) and 12th (2:40.32), respectively.
Sophomore Wesley Hebert (Leominster, MA) paced himself to 15th place in the 3,000 with a time of 9:34.46 for a personal best.
Third-year Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) cleared a height of 12-07.50 (3.85m) for 16th place and a new season high as freshman Andrew Coates (Amherst, MA) finished eighth in the high jump (1.78m/5-10).
Next week Worcester State will head to Southern Maine for the MASCAC/Alliance Championships.
