Men's Indoor Track Takes Home Third At MASCAC/Alliance Championship

 

Men's Indoor Track Remains Ranked Fourth In USTFCCCA New England Regional Index

Gorham, ME --- Paced by sophomore Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA), the Worcester State men's indoor track and field team placed third in both the MASCAC/Alliance this evening at the University of Southern Maine.

With 164 points, the Blue and Gold were just 31 off of Bridgewater State's first-place total (195) and six points off of Westfield State's sum (170) while they posted their best-ever finish in the Alliance standings with a program-record 107.5 points.

Gibson was tremendous as he propelled the Lancers with two individual titles in the 55 meters (6.46) and a MASCAC tying mark of 7.78 in the 55 meter hurdles. He also tacked on third in the long jump (21-6/6.55m) and fourth in the triple jump (41-6.50/12.66m).

The 4x200 meter relay of sophomore classmates Shaun Corum (Billerica, MA), Matthew Alley (Milford, MA), Kevin Conant (E. Longmeadow, MA) and freshman Jerome Drane (Uxbridge, MA) clocked a MASCAC/Alliance title sprint of 1:33.40, to establish a new league record in the event which was being contested for the first time.

The 4x400 meter relay team of junior Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA), sophomore Stephen Gannon (Foxboro, MA) along with senior teammates Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) and Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) tacked on a MASCAC title with a final split of 3:27.70.

Junior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) also cleared 6-06.25 (1.99 meters) in the high jump for a MASCAC medal that was also second in the Alliance.

Sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) impressed by timing second in the MASCAC and Alliance in the 55 (6.58) and long jump (22-0.25/6.71m) before placing fifth in the triple jump (41-04.25/12.60m).

Gannon put up the second-best split in the 200 (21.11) in the Alliance while his 400 (51.24) was second in the MASCAC. Mazeika's second-place finish in the 800 (2:02) was fourth in the Alliance.

Parrella and Rafael chipped in with third (51.72) and fourth (51.80), respectively in the 400, while Drane notched third in the 200 (23.16).

Junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) was third in the 55 meter hurdles (8.24) and his finish of fourth in the Alliance in the pole vault (13-01.50/4.00m) helped him qualify for the Division III New England Championships in the event.

In the field, sophomore Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) had a leap of third in the high jump (6-04/1.93m) as freshman Dana Perry (Mendon, MA) put up third in the triple jump (41-09.25/12.73m).

Other solid times included freshman Justin Trafford (Milton, MA) and senior Kerry Sabanty (Stoughton, MA) placed fourth (1:25.60) and fifth (1:26.89) in the 600 while sophomore Patrick Bova (Princeton, MA) finished fifth in the 1,000 (2:41.73).

Second-year Robert White (Ludlow, MA) registered fifth in the weight throw (45-11.25) and junior Shawn McCabe (Mansfield, MA) notched sixth in the weight throw (42-8/13.00m).

Next week, the Lancers will compete at the two-day Division III New England Championships hosted by Bates.
