Johnson Leads Men at Worcester City Championships

Worcester, MA --- Senior Mark Johnson (Woburn, MA) hurled a second place throw of 56.47 meters in the javelin to help the men's indoor track and field team place fourth at the Worcester City Meet hosted by WPI.

WPI was the meet winner with 293 total points scored while Fitchburg State wasn't far behind with 188 points. Assumption also tallied 45 points followed by the Lancers score of 37 and Clark rounded out the field with 25.

Johnson's throw qualified him for the ECACs and the DIII New England regionals and it was .13 meters shy of the mark for the All-New England meet. Johnson also finished the meet placing sixth in the shot put (11.76 m).

Junior Jim Macera (Paxton, MA) also set the standard required for the Division III regional's in the hammer throw with a third place toss of 44.88 meters while he also finished seventh in the discus (36.26 m).

In the long jump, senior Matt Leeds (Bellingham, MA), sophomore Jason Patterson (N. Attleboro, MA) and freshman Jim Goyette (Millbury, MA) each took fourth (6.14 m), fifth (6.01 m) and sixth (5.67 m), respectively. Goyette also notched fourth in the triple jump (11.72 m) while freshman Nick Capone (Billerica, MA) placed fifth in the shot put (12.03 m).

On the track sophomore Robert Stahelski (S. Deerfield, MA) highlighted the runners after he recorded fourth in the 400 meter run with a time of 53.43.

First-year Eric Thulin (Millbury, MA) registered seventh in the 1500 (4:45.58) while sophomore Seth Pitts (Worcester, MA) and Patterson placed seventh (12.08) and eighth (12.12) in the 100, respectively.

Freshman Adam Correia (Fall River, MA) rounded out the finishers after he ended his day walking away with 10th in the 200 (25.13).

The Worcester State men's outdoor track and field team will continue their season when they head north to the Fitchburg Invitational next Saturday.
