Women's Basketball Defeats Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 75-60 non-conference victory over Nichols College Monday evening at the Nichols Athletic Center.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 13-6 overall on the season.

The Lancers came out hot out of the gate, converting on 4-of-6 first quarter three-point attempts to jump out to an early 20-11 lead. Freshman Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) hit three triples to lead all scorers with nine first quarter points, while classmate Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) pitched in five points of her own.

Junior Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) had an impressive stat line across the board in the second quarter to help the Lancers carry a 37-21 lead into the locker room. Cutting recorded a game-high five points, while also grabbing four boards and dishing out three assists in the quarter.

The hosts narrowly outscored Worcester State 22-21 in the third quarter, but the Lancers were able to maintain their solid lead built up in the first half. Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) led the Lancers with five points in the period, while Bison guard Isabella Nerney led all players with 11.

The Lancers converted on an impressive 8-for-11 clip (72.7 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter to close out the victory. Gallella, Blomgren, and senior Karalyn Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) all led the Lancers with four points on 2-for-2 shooting in the fourth.

MacMillan was Worcester State's leading scorer in the contest, scoring 16 points with six rebounds. Blomgren was close behind with 15 points and eight boards, while Cutting finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists. 

The Lancers will return to action with a key MASCAC battle against Westfield State on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
